These patterns of agreement broadened and deepened our understanding of this aspect of phonological variability. Two themes from this initial experience then guided further work. First, as noted above, the correlation between speakers from the same geographic area suggested that variability in speakers’ estimates of the mid vowel height could be characterized quantitatively, with degree of agreement with the Standard expected on the basis of how similar the speakers’ judgments were. If a speaker is idiosyncratic, he should be expected to distinguish the height of mid vowels less intensely than more typical speakers. Second, the fact that speakers’ judgments show different patterns based on the speakers’ regional background suggests that the variability central to the Standard’s description of Standard Italian may relate to the speaker’s own familiarity with its phonological details.
